Religion, Spirituality and the Arts (RSA) had its Culminating Exhibition of “Conversations with Ecclesiastes: ‘Is there Nothing New Under the Sun?’” during the 2024 Eclipse, heightening feelings of ephemerality and awe while this clock was first unveiled. The seminar investigated themes of seasons and cycles, shedding light on progress and purpose through all means of artistic expression amongst the cohort. The major themes in this work revolve around an individual’s on-going experiences of time and aging, boundary-marked by the singular moments of birth and death; set against a background of seasonal weather patterns and cosmic movements.
The clock creates the striking image of a figure with a leaf mask and a clock heart, while standing in front of a splash of reeds. It is complimented by the sculpture’s less-organic components: a porcelain wall mount and pedestal, representational of birth and death. From the wall mount, hangs a 32” bronze wind gong visually symbolizing a halo around the figures head; the audible and sensory experience of the gong in this space is uniting by means of harmony and resonance.
Less commonly identified than the figure, the form is reminiscent of burial encasements, musical instruments, marine vessels, and genitalic structures, all adding to the narrative facilitated by abstraction in the design.
